Customer Reviews
I am in nursing school and print between 30 and 50 pages a day in lecture material alone, plus papers and other assignments I turn it.
First of all: I printed 40 pages of black and white text and it took SO LONG to print those 40 pages that I watched the entirety of Hot Tub Time Machine (except the last 15 minutes). On average, it takes about 2 minutes PER PAGE to print.
Second of all: This thing is the most gigantic waste of ink I have ever encountered. I replace my cartridges every 10 to 14 days.
Third: it periodically decides to have technical issues. It will randomly not properly synch to my computer and I will have to reinstall the drivers to make it connect (granted the drivers only take a few minutes to install). It also periodically decides it cannot recognize its own ink cartridges, and requires a ridiculous struggle involving turning the printer on and off and installing and reinstalling the ink.
Installing the ink is a project in and of itself, the way the case is designed is that you cannot reach and remove the ink without pressing the red triangle button, and that is supposed to prompt it to slide over one slot at a time (pressing the button between each slot you need) so you can reach them. It doesn't actually function as ideally as this. Randomly, when you press the button, it will fling all the cartridges to the other side, and then fling right back to the starting position, never giving you access to what you need. Try going through this HELL every 10 to 14 days because you are once again out of ink.
Not to mention, the black cartridge is $16 and the color $35 if you want the "high capacity" ones. I can only imagine how often I'd be changing them if I bought the ever-so-slightly cheaper "low capacity" ink cartridges. I hate this printer. NEVER, EVER BUY THIS. NEVER. I cannot think of a single upside. Everything is either mediocre (picture/scan quality) or terrible.
Before you read any further, note the price. If you were to buy any printer/scanner in this range expecting a workhorse or to make archival prints, you would clearly be delusional.
I needed something to put on my desktop for light everyday printing and the NX130 seemed like it would fit the bill. It installed exactly as directed, with one hangup: the installation instructions call for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion users to go to the website rather than use the disc. They should have instructed 10.6 Snow Leopard users to do this as well, as the CD installer has an outdated and non-functional driver. Once I had downloaded and installed the most recent package from Epson, the printer worked as well as I expected. It prints a black and white page in about 30 seconds; color takes about 2 minutes. Color is fairly accurate, but this is clearly not a proof-quality device. I've only used the scanner a couple of times, but was pleasantly surprised by the scan quality. It's a little slow, but very clean and sharp with no sign of banding.
I would recommend this printer for light to moderate household use for text and photos. I would also consider it a good scanner for someone on a budget.
I would not recommend it to anyone who prints in high volume, or needs highly accurate color-matching for professional use.
